The History of the Adelaide Oval

The South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) was formed in 1871, requesting a city oval for cricketing purposes. The first major match was played three years after this, with football and tennis matches arriving in the late 1870s. This makes the Oval a ripe old age of 147, and it is only looking better with age.

Construction over the years has made the once simple ground into a mighty stadium with the capacity of more than 50, 000. The most recent makeover was completed in 2014, transforming it into one of the top stadiums in Australia. Including exceptional features such as enormous replay screens, high-quality audio, function rooms, an excellent restaurant, 2100 square metres of grass, and roughly 900 square metres of the viewing platform. Yet, with modernisation, the Adelaide Oval has kept some of its historic sections. The scoreboard, built in an Edwardian style, completed in 1911, still stands in the stadium today. The scoreboard represents the oval’s the cultural significance as well as its incredible antiquity.
