A Guide To Adelaide’s Green Spaces

Escape the busy city and explore some of Adelaide’s most renowned green spaces.

Adelaide is a great city for getting outdoors and enjoying green spaces. As of 2021, the city was made up of over 30 percent of green space. This is all in thanks to a city-wide plan to increase the green spaces across the city by 2024.

Learn more about some of Adelaide’s green spaces below!

Adelaide Botanic Garden

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is the perfect place to spend a tranquil afternoon. It’s one of the most gorgeous parks nestled right in the heart of the city. You’ll be surrounded by a wide range of plants as you stroll through the gorgeous, themed gardens. Explore the gardens on your own or take a tour with an educational guide!

This botanic garden was established in 1855 and spans across 51 hectares of land. While exploring the gardens, you’ll find a collection of native Australian plants and themed gardens. One of the most recognisable spots in the botanic garden is the Palm House, a large Victorian glass house.

Elder Park

Elder Park is another charming green space in the heart of Adelaide. It is conveniently located in a central location near the city’s cultural precinct and along the River Torrens. The park is home to Torrens Lake, the Festival Theatre and Adelaide’s Rotunda.

If you’re heading to Adelaide for an event, there’s a good chance the event may be happening here. Elder Park often hosts cultural events and festivals all year!

Adelaide Himeji Gardens

Adelaide’s Himeji Gardens is a unique location because it is a Japanese garden. The garden shows the strong tie between Adelaide and its sister city, Himeji. The relationship between the two cities was formed in 1982, with the gardens opening shortly after in 1985.

This garden isn’t as large as Adelaide’s Botanic Garden, but it holds just as much charm. You will find traditional Japanese style gardens, featuring sand, ponds, rocky areas and trees. There are also several structures located throughout the garden such as a zodiac stone lantern.

Morialta Conservation Park

The Morialta Conservation Park is a popular park in Adelaide. It’s perfect for strolls, recreational activities and sightseeing. Whether you’re visiting this park to go mountain biking or hike through the woodlands, you can easily spend an entire day here.

If you’re not up for a hike, you can do some wildlife spotting and take a short stroll to the waterfall. You can also have a picnic with friends and family, enjoying a nature reset away from the city centre.

Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla

Botanic Park/Tainmuntilla is the place to go if you want to spend time outside with friends. The park expands across 34 hectares and is located near Adelaide’s city centre.

When visiting this park, you can set out a blanket and read, have a picnic with friends or kick a ball around. If that didn’t already sound quite relaxing, this park also hosts outdoor movies and other events throughout the year!
