Hahndorf is a wonderfully charming little town that proudly hangs onto its German roots. Throughout town, you will pass – and stop into – numerous Bavarian confectioners, beer halls, souvenir shops and anywhere else that can be closely associated with Deutschland, enjoying what is always an uber fun time in the Adelaide Hills!
Whether you’re washing down wiener schnitzel with a large stein, picking berries at the Beerenberg Family Farm or checking out the The Cedars – home to Hans Heysen and his brilliantly artistic family – there is plenty to do in this curiously quaint town situated a short drive from the Adelaide city centre.
So, when is the best time of year to visit Hahndorf? Well, no prizes for assuming it’s the summer months, when the days are warm, the sky is blue and you don’t have to worry about being bogged down by sea level heat!
Yes, given that Hahndorf is located in the Adelaide Hills, the temperature hovers a couple of degrees below what it does in the city, with shady groves and lush farmland providing extra respite from the city heat.
And, once you get up there, be sure to enjoy these experiences:
Hahndorf Main Street
The first thing you have to do upon arriving in Hahndorf is to get acquainted with its German past, and there is naturally no better place to do that than on Main Street. The street is dotted with artisanal shops, jewellers, a leathersmith, brewery and, of course, plenty of German-style food stops like pubs, bakeries and confectioners.
Beerenberg Family Farm
One of the ultimate family fun activities around Hahndorf is strawberry picking at Beerenberg Family Farm, a spot synonymous with delicious Aussie condiments. From November through to April, you and the little ones can venture to farm to enjoy a spot of wild strawberry picking, taking home your pick as well as a cornucopia of goods from the Beerenberg store!
Hahndorf Farm Barn
Another outrageously fun family activity, the Hahndorf Farm Barn is one of the best places in Australia for kids to get up close and personal with adorable farm animals as well as some of our native favourites!
There are pony and tractor rides as well as cow milking demonstrations and python holding for the braver littlies, making it a super fun way to spend the day in the gorgeous Hahndorf…
