Victoria Square is a must visit on any trip to Adelaide, here’s why!

Victoria Square lies at the very heart of Adelaide City. Also known as Tarntanyangga, it sits at the crossroads of King William and Grote-Wakefield Streets. It acts as a bustling thoroughfare through the city. It is a hive of activity thanks to its eclectic selection of shops, cafes, restaurants, and things to do. In 2013, the square went under a major renovation and was livened up with a whole host of new features and attractions.

As it’s directly in the geographic centre of Adelaide, it is also surrounded by numerous historic buildings. They are home to government officials, top law firms, and commercial professionals, giving it an impressive aesthetic. But the scene at Victoria Square is also pretty young. The student population loves the international university precinct in the square, as well as the array of shops.

Just off the square, you’ll found Adelaide’s most popular food and dining precinct. Explore the great selection of restaurants of Gouger Street, Chinatown, and the fresh local stalls in the Central Market. At any time of day, you’ll see numerous people enjoying the scenery of the square. Whether they’re having a coffee with friends, doing a bit of shopping, or simply kicking back and enjoying the sunshine amongst the grand selection of buildings.

A Nature Enthusiasts’ Dream

But it is not all shops and cafes in Victoria Square. In fact, a huge effort has been made to ensure it is nature friendly. Alongside the impressive brickwork and towering buildings, there are pretty plant beds that add colour to the surroundings. Along with the recent redevelopment, the square has also been landscaped and is now complete with shady areas and lawn areas that are perfect for the spring and summer seasons.

There are more than 100 semi-mature native trees dotted around, including Spotted Gums. The lush event lawn has been sprinkled with London Plane trees for added shade in the warmer months. Now, the newly landscaped area isn’t just for shoppers. It’s also perfect for anyone looking to kick back and enjoy the sunshine against a picturesque backdrop.

Victoria Square provides the perfect place to hang out at any time of the year, but autumn seems to be a firm favourite with locals as this marks Australia’s festival season. During this time, parades, performances, and outdoor shows bring the square to life and draw in crowds from all over the city.
